If you have a work contract on a yacht, check with them as to which qualification they need. If in doubt or you do not have a job and are going to dock walk it may well be worthwhile doing the Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD).

What is in the Proficiency in Security Awareness course:

  • The ISPS Code
  • Introduction to Maritime security
  • Key Threats
  • Plans, Policies & Procedures
  • Communication & Reporting

We will be pleased to advise you on the what you need. Fill out the enquiry form on the right or give us a call.

PROFICIENCY IN DESIGNATED SECURITY DUTIES (PDSD)

Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)

As with most other qualifications in this industry the base level certificates may be technically what you need, but to get the job interview there is an ever increasing requirement for high qualifications. It can be so bad that a Yachtmaster will only be considered as deck crew scrubbing decks and polishing metal work. Therefore if time and money allows try to expand your CV so you can be employed in a range of duties. Consider the PDSD as the starting platform for security qualifications.

Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) certification. For Superyacht Crew this means that the Captain can assign you a roll within the Ships security plan.

The four modules include:

  • Maintain Ship Security Plan
  • Recognition of Security Risk and Threats
  • Undertake Regular Security Inspections of the Ship
  • Proper usage of Security Equipment and Systems
THE SHIP SECURITY OFFICER (SSO)

The Ship Security Officer (SSO) course is a requirement if you are looking to work in the maritime industry long term. A lot of deck officers will also be tasked with the SSO duties. Only on large vessels would there be a dedicated ships security officer.

The SSO will be able to understand the principals and responsibilities of a Ship Security Officer. They would have acquired the skills to Maintain ship security plans, Appreciate security levels, Develop and maintain measures for the control of access to the vessel, Conduct ship security and risk assessments and Implement effective search mechanisms and security control. These measures run 24/7 at sea and in port.

Course content includes:

  • Introduction
  • Maintain and Supervise the Implementation of a Ship Security Plan
  • Assess Security Risk, Threat and Vulnerability
  • Undertake Regular Inspections of the Ship to Ensure that Appropriate Security Measures are Implemented and Maintained
  • Ensure that Security Equipment and Systems, if any, are Properly Operated, Tested and Calibrated
