The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course in South Africa is often considered an entry-level course for many. It provide you with permission to drive a powerboat for recreational purposes and strengthens your resume in the marine industry. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) Course – What do you need to know?

In the United Kingdom and many foreign countries, the Powerboat Level 2 Certificate is equivalent to having a powerboat license. However, in South Africa, you will have to abide by SAMSA Skipper’s regulations. Regardless, having an RYA Powerboat Level 2 license means it unlocks the opportunities to drive a powerboat in many parts of the world.

Note: you will require an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) to do so. Sail and Power SA can help you with obtaining one. South African or British nationals or other eligible nationals can also apply for this.

RYA PB1 v/s RYA PB2

For many aspiring skippers in the industry, the RYA PB2 course is the most basic one. There are no requirements for joining this course.

What does the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course cover?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course in South Africa is a basic course. It gives you basic theoretical and practical knowledge about the following modules:

  • Launching and recovery
  • Confined Space Manoeuvring
  • Docking the boat properly
  • Handling the boat – basics manoeuvring
  • Man overboard procedure
  • Mooring buoy
  • Using the anchor
  • Basic navigations and tides
  • Introduction to powerboat safety measures
  • Towing

This course lasts for a total duration of 2 days. Children aged 12 and above can also participate in the course. However, to obtain a commercial endorsement, they will have to wait till they turn 16. Furthermore, Children between the ages of 12-16 cannot drive the powerboat on their own. A certified guardian must be present on the vessel during the activities.

What can I do with the RYA PB2 Certification?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate is globally acknowledged, meaning you can easily rent and drive a powerboat up to 10 meters in length. This certificate has no expiry; however, we strongly recommend you to retake this course if you are rusty with your powerboat skills.

In South Africa also, if you are a foreign tourist renting a powerboat for recreational purposes for a short duration, the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate will be considered valid and you do not have to apply for a SAMSA Skipper’s License.

Role of the RYA PB2 Certification in the Career Path as a Skipper.

You can also use this certificate not only for recreational purposes but also for commercial purposes. However, the certificate alone will not be enough.
